James H. Stanley, son of James Rowell Stanley (1807-1858) and Mahala Coney Stanley (1814-1858), served in the 8th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A. His brother, Joel Coney Stanley (1844-1899), also served in the Confederate Army. The collection includes letters, 1861-1862, from James H. Stanley, written during his service with the 8th Georgia Regiment, C.S.A., in northern Virginia and on the Peninsula, to his sisters Mary Cumming and Leah Cumming in Georgia, discussing his military experiences and camp life and requesting that they send supplies; and two letters, 1861, from another brother, Joel Coney Stanley (1844-1899), a soldier in the Confederate Army stationed at Fort Barrancas, Fla., concerning his reasons for joining the army and his expectations of death. Also included are two report cards and an invitation received by James H. Stanley in 1860 while a student at Collinsworth Institute in Talbotton, Ga.; a poem; and photocopies of two obituaries, 1899, of Joel Coney Stanley.
